Nigeria: Irregular Migration - UK Wants FG to Specify Visa Procedure

The British Government has called on the Nigerian government to make known its polices and procedure for issuing visa to Nigerians who are aspiring to travel outside the country. The British High Commissioner, Bob Dewar who made this call at a National Workshop on information campaign against irregular migration recently in Abuja, said UK approach is based on the principles of partnership, of decency, of mutual respect - and of respect for the law. His words, "We think it's also important that Nigeria's partners do their best to provide information about their policies and procedures, including for visas. "The UK approach is based on the principles of partnership, of decency, of mutual respect - and of respect for the law. Our policy is one of managed, legal, regular migration in the interests of both receiving countries, in this case Nigeria, and migrants. "We welcome the contribution to our country and its economy made by regular, legal, bone fide law-abiding migrants." He pointed out that Migration in general is an important part of UK bilateral relationship with Nigeria, adding that as a result of this, the Commission recently launched an initiative for highly skilled migrants using the new points based visa system, designed not least to help make the process more predictable for the applicant. "Other points based system categories will be announced in the coming period and we will keep the Foreign Ministry, the Government and the public very closely informed. "For us, respect for the law and integrity are fundamental. Visa, support and visa application, visa form. Irregular migrants i.e those who do not have legal documents, or have illegal documents, who are breaking the law, using fraud and so on only, make things more difficult for bona fide legal migrants and travelers", he stated. Dewar however, noted that UK is doing its best to help and support Nigeria's own economic growth and progress to the benefit in particular of poorer people. "We are trying to make a constructive contribution in all areas, from the promotion of investment to Nigeria to capacity building, provision of skills and training and so on. "These contributions we hope will help Nigerians to benefit from economic opportunities at home", he added.
